What Is Adult Foster Care (AFC)?
Adult Foster Care is a MassHealth-funded program that lets individuals with disabilities or chronic conditions receive daily care at home instead of a nursing facility. A live-in caregiver — often a family member — provides help with personal care, meals, medication reminders, and mobility. Caregivers receive a tax-free stipend and professional support from healthcare staff.
Who Qualifies?
To be eligible for AFC, individuals must:
- Be a MassHealth member
- Need daily help with one or more Activities of Daily Living (bathing, eating, dressing, toileting, mobility, transferring)
- Live with a caregiver who provides daily support
- Not require 24/7 skilled nursing care

- Eligible: Adult children, siblings, relatives, or close friends
